Retaining walls that still stand straight in ten years

Most Perth blocks aren't flat and almost none of them are solid. Under the lawn on the coastal plain it's loose sand sitting on limestone, and sand doesn't hold an angle or drain the way clay does. Water runs straight through it, piles up behind whatever's in the way and pushes. That's why so many Perth walls lean, bulge or crack within a couple of winters.

Perth Retaining Wall Builders is the retaining wall side of WA Fencing and Retaining, a local crew owned and run by Leigh Graham out of Heathridge and building across Perth since 2007. We build limestone block walls, panel-and-post walls, concrete sleeper walls with galvanised steel posts, and the Colorbond fence that usually sits on top.

The bits that decide how long a wall lasts are the bits you can't see once it's finished: footings deep enough to reach something solid, an ag drain and clean aggregate behind the wall, and backfill compacted in layers instead of dumped in one go. We don't skip them, and we'll show you where they are on the quote.

Every job starts with a free on-site measure. We look at the fall across your block, what the ground is doing and how high the wall needs to be, then give you one fixed price in writing with a start date. Excavation, removal of the old wall, spoil removal and the clean-up are in that price. No surprise rubbish bill at the end.

Why Perth homeowners book us

Footings to solid ground

In Perth sand that often means deeper than the wall looks like it needs. Where we hit the limestone shelf, we core into it. Guessing the depth is the most common reason walls fail.

Drainage behind the wall

Ag drain, clean aggregate backfill and a proper outlet. Water trapped behind a wall pushes it over, not the weight of the soil.

Wall and fence in one job

The wall height decides where the fence posts go, so we build both together. One crew, one quote, no gap under the fence and no two trades blaming each other.

One price, in writing

Free measure, then a fixed written quote with a start date before any money changes hands. Council check done before we book you in.

How a retaining wall job runs

Six steps, the same on every job:

  1. Free on-site measure. We check the fall, the soil and the height before anyone talks price.
  2. Fixed-price quote in writing. Materials, height, length, drainage, excavation, removal of the old wall and clean-up. One number and a start date.
  3. Council check. Many Perth councils want a building permit once a wall retains more than 500 mm, and some want engineering. We confirm with your council before booking the job.
  4. Excavation and footings. Old wall out, ground cut to level, footings dug to depth.
  5. Build. Footings, wall, drainage and backfill compacted in layers.
  6. Clean-up. Spoil gone, site swept, nothing left on your verge.

Common questions

How much does a retaining wall cost in Perth?

It depends on the wall type, height, length and access. Published Perth guides put installed limestone walls at roughly $250 to $650 per square metre of wall face. See our retaining wall cost guide for the sources and a worked example, then book a free measure for a fixed price.

Do I need council approval?

Often, once a wall retains more than 500 mm. The rules differ between councils, so we check with yours as part of the quote. Our council approval guide covers Joondalup, Stirling and Wanneroo.

Can you build the fence on top as well?

Yes. It's the most common job we do. Building the wall and the Colorbond fence together means the posts are set to the finished wall height.

Do you take away the old wall?

Yes. Demolition, excavation, spoil removal and clean-up are included in the quoted price.
